Dust off your feather boas and beads, straw boaters and spats – Ragtime is coming to town 18:00 October 27!
Classics at the Castle has a fun Friday soiree planned for the day when pianist and Scott Joplin specialist LIZA JOUBERT will entertain patrons. This professional musician has performed in a range of musical activities, from solo and chamber music concerts on a restored 1802 Clementi piano in historic Bertram House, Cape Town, to playing double bass and piano – but not at the same time – for numerous French cabaret performances throughout Southern Africa with chanteuse Daniele Pascal.
Liza has played her ‘Ragtime Plus’ show in France and Switzerland and she also staged it at this year’s Grahamstown NA Festival; the programme also includes items from the Gershwin Songbook and lesser-known ragtime composers.
“As this is our springtime soiree and the music is toe-tapping stuff, we ask audience members to rise to the occasion further by adding 1920s/30s items to their attire,” says Sue Gordon.
No pressure – but there will be prizes for the best Gatsby or gangster, the best Daisy Buchanan flapper, or Roaring Twenties couple.
LIZA JOUBERT, born and educated in Stellenbosch, was the first resident accompanist at Beau Soleil Music Centre CT and before that accompanied the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, on their national and international tours.
She has also been the concert pianist aboard the MV Marco Polo luxury liner on their five-week cruise between Cape Town, Buenos Aires and Antarctica. Liza has collaborated with musicians as diverse as pianist Jill Richards and Belgian poet-musician Stef Bos and has even introduced South African piano music to audiences in the Czech Republic. Lisa is currently collaborating with filmmaker
Panoussis on a performance of Arnold van Wyk’s “Nagmusiek” for solo piano with a specially created film accompaniment.
