Parliament: Home affairs committee calls for action on Gupta naturalisation fraud

After a lengthy inquiry into the Gupta family’s relationship with the Department of Home Affairs, Parliament’s home affairs committee has filed its final report. The committee wants criminal charges laid against the Guptas and their right-hand man Ashu Chawla for the false information they submitted in their bid for early South African naturalisation. The committee also recommends that future Ministers of Home Affairs have their wings clipped when it comes to the ability to hand out citizenship. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-03-18-home-affairs-committee-calls-for-action-on-gupta-naturalisation-fraud/…

FACT CHECK – ANALYSIS: South African industry falsely blames job losses on sugar tax

Even before the sugar tax was introduced, key stakeholders in the sugar industry were arguing that it would cause massive job losses. Now, less than a year after its implementation, there are calls for a moratorium on the tax.The argument is that the tax is directly responsible for the loss of anything from 1,000 and up to 10,000 jobs. BY-ELECTIONS: ANC has a big night in Northern KZN, making gains against IFP

The ANC took two wards off the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), gaining wards in eNdumeni (Dundee) and uMhlabuyalingana in the far northern part of the province. The win in eNdumeni gave the party outright control of the council. The ANC has now won three wards off the IFP in northern KwaZulu-Natal since December 2018 and are rebounding against the IFP in this battleground part of the province. There were four other KwaZulu-Natal by-elections with the IFP and EFF registering good gains in some of the races. The DA had a convincing hold in Nelson Mandela Bay and the ANC largely held their ground in a Limpopo by-election. https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2019-03-07-anc-has-a-big-night-in-northern-kzn-making-gains-against-ifp/…
